Rapper, Poet and Singer Samata X has been writing poetry, rhymes and even short stories since she was about 10 years old! Born and raised in Cambridge, UK she grew up listening to the likes of Mary J Blige, Lil Kim, SWV, Monica, A Tribe Called Quest, Immature, LL Cool J, Heavy D, the Pharcyde and many more.
However, defining her style is something she struggles with. “I find it hard as when people ask me about my style and I say 'Rap' they tend to assume I do ‘Gangsta’ rap and ask me if I like Foxy Brown. I normally have to explain the Poetry/Spoken Word Part. To be honest I see most thoughtful, conscious hip-hop/rap as poetry anyway and most rappers I like have some tracks that fit the 'Poetry' bill. Having said that I also appreciate the fact that poetry comes in different shapes and forms.
If you hear 'Raindrops' you may say that yes this could be Poetry. With ' None of You' it is certainly rap, but in Beef if you listen to what I am saying could it be poetry? For some it could - definitions can be hazy...lol.” Pushed for a definition further she struggles again and says “ ...just put me in the 'Rap/Spoken Word/RnB Category' or make up your own mind :-).”
With a degree in Economics, Finance and Management (Bsc. Hons) tucked under her belt Samata X is well prepared for all of her business ventures which include an award-winning clothing label, Samata's Muse.
